Best motion sensor for your smart home

Automating is fun! Home automation requires something to trigger a so-called trigger. Then a motion sensor is a perfect way to automate your home. Often it is precisely movement in a specific area that you want to use to, for example, turn on the lighting. But as usual, the possibilities are endless and only the imagination sets the limits.

What is a motion sensor?

The Aqarq Presence Sensor FP2 belongs to a new generation of sensors that makes use of a mmWave technology. This allows for a significantly more advanced and accurate detection of movements. The sensor can sense movements as small as a person's breathing. It can also sense up to five people in the room and divide the room into up to 30 different zones. These zones, in turn, can be used to automate your home. For example, you can divide your kitchen into two zones, one at the dining table and one at the sink. When someone moves to the sink, the work light comes on.

The Aqarq Presence Sensor FP2 also has a light sensor (LUX) that can be used for automation. Using the sensor in the bedroom also adds some clever features as the sensor can sense if someone is lying in bed. Another smart feature is fall detection. If someone suddenly falls in the home, the sensor can trigger an automation, for example, to send a push notification to your phone.

In summary, the Aqarq Presence Sensor FP2 is a player in the market using a technology that we will see more of in the future. If you are willing to pay a slightly higher price, this may be for you. Keep in mind that the Aqarq Presence Sensor FP2 requires constant current.

Aqara, as usual, delivers high quality products. This update to their motion sensor comes with native support for Matter and has a battery life of up to 2 years.

The design makes it easy to mount the sensor in several ways. Either upside down on the ceiling or against a wall. You can also take the drill foot and set the sensor directly on the table or shelf.

The sensor has a detectable area with a wide angle of 150-170 degrees and a length of about 7 m.

Thanks to the motion sensor's stand-alone light sensor with support for Matter, you can create light-based automations independently of the motion sensor.

Eve Motion Sensor is an advanced motion sensor for smart homes that is compatible with The Matter Standard, allowing it to be integrated into various smart ecosystems. When it detects movement, it can activate scenarios, such as turning on lights or starting other connected devices, both indoors and outdoors, thanks to its IPX3 certification for weather protection.

Matter means that it can be connected to several different smart home systems, not just Apple HomeKit. This makes it more flexible and user-friendly for those who have various smart products in their home.

Battery life can vary greatly depending on frequency of use and temperature conditions. Although battery life is normally long, it may need to be changed more often in cold outdoor environments.

Unfortunately, the sensor does not have a temperature sensor, which would have been both reasonable and desirable when operating for outdoor use.

Different types of motion sensors

PIR - Passive infrared sensor

A passive motion sensor detects motion by sensing differences in temperature using infrared light.

MW - Microvawe sensor

This type of sensor instead makes use of microwave pulses and measures the reflections of what is moving.

Outdoor use

In this test, we have chosen to focus only on motion sensors for indoor use. A good option for outdoor use is Philips Hue Motion Sensor.

Field of view (FOV)

Be sure to choose a motion sensor that has such a wide sensor so that it covers the entire area you want to monitor. All motion sensors cover different sizes of surfaces but also depths, so read on before choosing which sensor to buy. The values we have chosen to present in this test are the value that is the maximum length of the sensor. If the movement takes place closer to the sensor then most people have a wider FOV. The range thus increases the closer you get to the motion sensor.

Temperature sensor

Many motion sensors also include a temperature sensor for extended functionality. With fewer devices in your smart home, it's easier to keep track of and maintain your devices with, for example, battery replacement. Combine temperature, LUX and motion and you have a very powerful sensor that complicates your smart home in many ways.

Adjustable timeout function

When choosing a motion sensor/motion sensor, it is important to consider the area of use. Where should it be placed and what should it be able to measure. In some sensors, you can adjust the time between the sensor detecting motion and activating it and detecting motion again. This is an extra good feature for battery-powered sensors that are mounted in a place where there is a lot of movement as the sensor saves a lot of battery from being disabled for short periods of time.

Surveillance camera as a motion sensor

In some cases, you can also use your surveillance camera as a motion sensor. Depending on the hub or system you use, your camera can be used as a trigger to, for example, turn on your outdoor lights.

Tips on how to use a motion sensor in your smart home

Activate your morning routine

A good way to use your motion sensor is to point it at a surface that you always move within in the morning e.g. your bathroom. With simple automation, your motion sensor can trigger your morning routine if it senses movement within a certain time interval in the morning.

Automate using the light sensor (LUX)

Many of the PIR sensors on the market also have the ability to measure the amount of light, this is measured in LUX. For example, it allows the sensor to ignore movement above or below a certain Lux value and thus only send detected motion during the day or night. In this way, it also saves battery. So you can use the Lux value to adjust your lighting in your smart home. In this way, the amount of light from your lamps is adjusted according to the amount of natural light.

Notify me when the mail arrives

Since it can be complicated to use surveillance cameras outside your home, it can sometimes be better to have a motion sensor. Install it in the mailbox and you will receive notifications when the postman has been there.
